7 DIY Steps to Staging Your Home

Molly Bruno September 29, 2021

If you are thinking about selling your home, it may not be possible to have a professional stager, as most prefer to stage if a home is not being vacant to prevent wear and tear and damage. Here are 7 DIY steps for staging your home while still living in it. For more staging tips and a full marketing plan to list your home, contact Molly Bruno, eXp Realty, 860-961-8627 for a complimentary consultation.

  1. Declutter & Clean- When you are still living in your home, it can be tough to keep your space organized, but keeping areas of your home looking clean and tidy makes it much more appealing to potential homeowners. This includes keeping it very clean; wiping down countertops and keeping all furniture & decor pieces in presentable condition. Toss anything that is worn or broken.

  2. Pops of Color - Though a popular choice made by professional stagers is to make your space completely neutral, pops of color is something that home buyers can be drawn to as well. If you have a color theme throughout your home, keep it, it may appeal to your buyer!

  3. Storage - Consider a place to store your personal belongings. When buyers are viewing your space, maintain a cozy, lived-in feel, and remove unnecessary large furniture & flashy decor.

  4. Your Entryway -  The entry/foyer area of your home is the first area that buyers will see when coming in to view your home. Put effort into making this space stand out. Dirty carpets, scattered shoes or a disorganized entry way could immediately turn off a potential homebuyer.

  5. Mirrors & Art - Mirrors add so much dimension to a room, making it feel much bigger, and adding a great accent to your space. Art adds a pop of color and some personality to your home that most buyers will love to see

  6. Depersonalizing Your Space - Take down all personal pictures & belongings to appeal to potential home buyers. Allow buyers to envision themselves & their family in your home.

  7. Lighting - Allow for natural lighting to showcase your space & add lighting in darker areas of your home for a light & bright feel.

5 Ways to Stage Your Home for Selling Success

Molly Bruno October 13, 2017
  1. Clear off the counters in your kitchen from clutter. You might like having all your gadgets out, but putting them away will help buyers envision themselves living there.

  2. Slipcover furniture with neutral colors to cover up worn out items or loud patterns.

  3. Hang curtains higher than windows that go all the way to the floor. By creating vertical lines for the eye, you create the illusion of larger space.

  4. Minimize colors and patterns. Keep a color scheme in living rooms, bedrooms, and other living areas. Pick one or two complementary colors, and stick to neutrals for the rest of the furniture and decorations.

  5. Create 3 light sources for each room. If rooms are dark and lacking a central overhead lighting, strategically place lamps to provide maximum light throughout the space. Replace any burnt out bulbs.
